Live-Edge Cedar Slabs in Kansas City

Wyco Wood Co. mills live-edge slabs from eastern red cedar harvested in the Midwest and milled right here in Kansas City. Each slab keeps the natural outside edge of the tree, so no two are alike. They're a great fit for tables, bar tops, floating shelves, mantels, benches and wall art.
We cut our slabs on a TimberKing 1620 bandsaw mill. As a small, veteran-owned sawmill, we can talk with you about the look you're after and help you find the right piece.
What makes eastern red cedar slabs special
Bold color: deep red heartwood with bright cream sapwood along the edges
Lots of character, with knots, swirls and natural edges
That fresh cedar smell
Lightweight compared to most hardwoods, so shelves and mantels are easier to hang
Popular uses
Coffee tables, side tables and benches
Floating shelves and mantels
Bar tops and countertop accents
Charcuterie boards, signs and craft projects
Live-edge wavy siding for sheds and cabins
We use live-edge wavy siding on our own shed at the mill, and it's one of our favorite looks for outbuildings and accent walls.
Sizes and pricing
Our live-edge cedar slabs are $5 per board foot, with tax included. Every slab is different, so the price of each one depends on its size. Our slabs are cut up to 8 ft long, which is our maximum length. Tell us the project and rough size, and we'll let you know what we have or can cut.
For standard boards, posts and beams, our Price Calculator gives instant prices.
Sold green and air-dried
Our slabs are sold green and air-dried. They are not kiln-dried. If you're building furniture, plan to let the slab dry and settle before flattening and finishing it. We're glad to talk through drying basics when you pick up.
Have your own log?
If you have a cedar, walnut, oak or other tree you'd like turned into slabs, we offer custom log milling. We can bring the mill to you, or you can drop the log off at our mill by appointment.
How to pick the right slab
Measure the space first, and add a little extra length and width for trimming.
Decide how much sapwood (the cream-colored outer wood) you want. Some people love the contrast, others want mostly red.
Look for cracks and knots and decide if they add character or get in the way of your project.
Send us photos or a sketch, and we'll tell you what we have that fits.
Finishing tips
Once your slab has dried, flatten it with a router sled or planer, sand it, and seal it with an oil or hard finish. Eastern red cedar is soft, so tabletops that see heavy use do best with a tough finish. For shelves and mantels, a simple oil really makes the red color pop.
Why buy slabs from a small sawmill
When you buy from Wyco Wood Co., you're talking with the veteran who milled the slab, not a warehouse clerk. We can tell you how the log was cut and how long it has been air-drying, and we can set aside a matched pair for a bench or a bookmatched look when the log allows it.
Pickup and delivery
Slabs can be picked up at the mill by appointment, or delivered around greater Kansas City, within about 30 miles of Kansas City, KS, for a flat $150. Orders are ready in 7 to 10 days.
