Picket sizes and prices

All pickets are 8 ft long with a flat top (no dog-ear), priced at $3.75 per board foot. Pick the width and thickness that fits your fence:

• 1x6x8 (full 1" thick, 6" wide): $15 each

• 3/4x6x8 (true 3/4" thick, 6" wide): $11.25 each

• 1x4x8 (full 1" thick, 4" wide): $10 each

• 3/4x4x8 (true 3/4" thick, 4" wide): $7.50 each

True 3/4" or full 1" thick

Most store-bought "1-inch" pickets are much thinner than they sound. Ours are milled to a true 3/4" or a full 1" thickness. The full 1" pickets are heavier and stiffer, which helps them stay flat and stand up to wind and weather.

Flat top, no dog-ear

Our pickets come with a clean, flat top, which works well for modern horizontal fences, privacy fences with a top cap, and garden or accent walls. They also work for siding, wainscoting and planter boxes.

Sold green, not kiln-dried

Our pickets are sold green and air-dried. They are not kiln-dried. Green cedar shrinks a little as it dries, so most installers leave a small gap between boards. Over time cedar weathers to a soft silver gray unless you seal or stain it.

How many pickets do I need?

A simple rule: divide the length of your fence in inches by the width of your picket plus the gap you plan to leave. For example, 6" pickets with a 1/4" gap need about 2 pickets per foot of fence. For a 100 ft privacy fence, that's about 192 pickets. Add a few extra for cuts and the odd board you don't love. Call us and we'll double-check your count before you buy.

Why eastern red cedar for a fence?

Eastern red cedar has natural oils that help it resist rot and bugs, so it holds up well in Kansas City's hot summers and freezing winters. It also has more color and character than plain white fence boards, with red heartwood, cream streaks and natural knots.

Delivery and pickup

We deliver around greater Kansas City, within about 30 miles of Kansas City, KS, for a flat $150, which covers most of the metro on both sides of the state line. Orders are ready in 7 to 10 days, and pickup at the mill is by appointment. A Kansas City customer recently used our cedar for a sharp horizontal cedar-and-metal fence.
